Dublin, Ireland – October 3, 2008 - At the past LRC XIII Conference, Andrés Vega providde an overview of existing open standards used for content handling and localization from a technical and engineering perspective. Attendees learned about the advantages of some of these standards in relation to localization, as well as their implementation challenges and issues. Practical and hands-on examples illustrated how these can be beneficial in a real production scenario.
The areas covered included:
- Unicode, its impact in solving cross-script and cross-platform issues, and conversion issues to and from existing legacy encodings. Attendees will learn about Unicode’s current implementation status on localization, DTP and multimedia tools. Some other topics which will be briefly considered include: OpenType font capabilities and Gaiji characters.
- XML, how it is used in localization as an open technology for content handling and data inter-exchange. Examples of localization and segmentation related issues will be provided.
- Content Management Systems. We will learn about their impact on authoring, updates, content validation and DTP and their localization challenges. Practical examples will help illustrate these.
