Back Jun 2009Tek talks at CNGL on “Open Standards used in Localization – an engineering approach.”
Dublin, Ireland – June 12th, 2009 – The Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL) in Dublin invited Andrés Vega, Lead Engineer at Tek Translation International, to speak on Open Standards used in localization from an engineering perspective. This tutorial session was presented to a group of CNGL members, including industry partner representatives such as Microsoft as well as post doctoral students from Dublin City University and the University of Limerick.
During the session, an overview of the following was given:
- Unicode and OpenType fonts, their impact in localization processes solving cross-script and cross-platform issues. Examples included conversion issues to and from existing legacy encodings.
- XML and its impact in localization as an open and extensible technology for content handling and data inter-exchange. Examples of XML localization workflows and issues were given.
- Content Management Systems and their impact on authoring, updates, content validation and DTP as well as localization benefits, challenges and practical examples.
The conclusion was that open standards are, in general, beneficial for all industry players and their use is recommended once the implementation of the standard has matured sufficiently. A thorough analysis of the applicability and usefulness of the standard to a given problem should always be done. Hands-on advice on how and when to use each one of the specific standards were discussed throughout the tutorial.
Prof. Josef van Genabith said that “It’s been a pleasure to have Andres Vega over to present a tutorial/seminar here in Dublin at CNGL. The seminar was excellent, very clear, to the point, well structured and very useful for us, our research students and some of our CNGL Industry partner staff. Andres answered questions very well. With Andres Vega you have an outstanding member in your team at Tek Translation.”
Andrés Vega has 9 years experience as a Localization Engineer at Tek Translation International and specializes in complex project engineering with focus on CMS, encoding and complex scripts. Previously he worked as a programming languages teacher: OO programming, C and Java. He has a background in chemistry and healthcare.
